THEn Italy medicine isand it will be even more, woman: the phenomenon of the feminization of the medical profession is certainly destined to increase in the next ten years, and then perhaps tend towards a situation of greater equality. The data processed on March 8th by the company clearly states this FNOMCeOthe National Federation of Orders of Surgeons and Dentists.
Gender equality, overtaking women doctors
To understand the situation well, however, we need to make a distinction between the doctors still in service who belong to the highest age group, therefore over 75, and those under 70. In fact, looking at the total number of doctors registered in the registers as of 16 last January, parity still seemed far away: between the 416,088 total professionals, men prevail, making up 53.5% of the total. This figure, however, is due to the clear preponderance of doctors who are part of the over 75 generation, where for example, female doctors make up only 16%.
The pink wave among the younger generations
Conversely, if we analyze the audience of 325,114 doctors under 70 years old, the situation is reversed and women make up 53% of the total. The percentage increases even more if we lower the age limit: women make up 59% of those under 55 and almost 60% of doctors under 50. And they are the overwhelming majority, 64%, if we narrow the field between 40 and 44. Going further down with age, the gap instead narrows: among doctors under 40, women drop to 57.4% , however remaining the majority even in the younger groups.
Women doctors, a growing phenomenon
From this scenario, it is clear that the phenomenon is certainly destined to increase in the next ten yearswhen the members who are currently between 55 and 69 years old will retire and will be replaced by groups with even higher female percentages. It is not the same thing as regards the dentistry profession, where the vast majority are men: 71%, 45,553 units, against 18,881 professionals. However, if we look at the younger age groups, we are equal: between 25 and 29 years old there are 1447 men, 1435 women.
Different working models in the profession
«In our National Health Service, female colleagues are now the majority – comments the President of FNOMCeO, Filippo Anelli – especially in the age groups where careers need to be built and professional and family responsibilities increase. In light of this, it is increasingly fundamental to take this reality into account, providing organizational models that allow women and men to reconcile work times with those of private life and family”.
