Gen Z. We, born with “Binge watching”

LThe very young people like audiovisual media: it feeds the will and the urgency to enjoy, which is to communicate. Then, among the myriad of contents available, there are actually few products that succeed in communicating closeness, and therefore arouse interest in this generation. If I have to think of a TV series that has succeeded recently, it comes to mind Euphoria, although I personally loved it up to a certain point. You hit the nail on the head, without romanticising, the raw and terrible reality that the teenage protagonists find themselves facing.

You can’t lie to Gen Z, you can’t sugarcoat the bitter truth of some aspects of life. We need content that has the sensitivity to deal with topics without shame, as another successful series does, Sex Educationfor example.

Gen z between series and cinema

This also applies to the cinema. We are looking for real films, strong feelings, uncomfortable situations, zero fake romance. Titles like. come to mind We are infinite, Teen Spirit, The hate you give, Shiva Baby. Or Love Simon, Call Me by Your Name, Moonlight or Booksmart. Then there is the world of cartoons and animation. I think Gen Z has somewhat rejected the narrative of Prince Charming and Disney Princesses, always because we are getting closer to an actually less idealized representation of reality. We like to talk about feelings, but not diluted with clichés, in pastel shades. Furthermore, we are not present-centric, on the contrary.

Having streaming platforms at our disposal, i.e. the possibility of finding practically everything, everywhere, we have begun to recover many films and series from the past, especially the cult ones that in some way marked the previous ones. Iconic series such as Friends, The Office, cult films such as the Harry Potter saga or the Marvel sagas, Mean Girls. Titles that have made the history of cinema such as The Godfather, Drive, Fight Club… Some icons of the 2000s are even influencing the visual aesthetics, even the clothing, make-up, make-up of very young people.

The so-called “rewatching”, looking at pieces of the past, even if I’ve already seen it, I explain it as a search for security. It’s nice to know that by going into the past we find very beautiful things, of absolute quality, that remain still there, they are there waiting for us. Titanic, Gone with the Wind. Tragic or wonderful, moving or reassuring endings.

Past things, recovered, are clear, certain. We are bombarded with too much content that it is difficult to choose from. Diversity, gender identity, feminism, sexuality: it is not enough to represent them at all costs because otherwise we are not keeping up with the times. Gen Z recognizes the sensitivity and truthfulness that is used. And the visual industry is starting to listen to us.
