Gasunie is looking into whether the Netherlands can import more LNG

The Gasunie is looking into whether more liquefied natural gas can be temporarily imported into our country. Both at existing locations such as Eemshaven and Rotterdam, but also at new locations such as the port of Terneuzen.

In Eemshaven, it is being investigated whether the capacity of the current LNG terminal, which has only been in use since the beginning of September, can be expanded. Additional imports of liquefied natural gas will help to lower prices, according to Gasunie. Incidentally, the new locations are temporary installations to prevent the energy transition from being hindered in the future.

The gas company also anticipates that there will be no gas shortages in the Netherlands this winter. This has already been shown in a study by Gasunie Transport Services (GTS). The prices are high and that is because there is still a structural shortage in Northwest Europe. The consequences of this lead to a price increase in our market area, according to Gasunie.

Next year it’s about it

Hydrogen is an alternative to natural gas. Gasunie is busy expanding the network for this in our country. However, according to the company, hydrogen will not be able to replace the demand for gas in the coming years.

The European Commission and the international energy agency IEA also found on Monday that there is enough gas in Europe this winter, but that it will be tight next year. A shortage is especially possible if there is less and less gas coming from Russia or no gas at all by that time.
