Environmental organizations are already looking very gloomy. They warn that the spills threaten to cause a historically large environmental disaster. Environmental Defense Fund states, based on a rough estimate, that 115,000 tons of methane escaped. That would be equivalent to 9.6 million tons of CO2, about the same as 2 million petrol cars emit in a year.
