Gas leaks into crawl space at restaurant in Monnickendam

A lot of gas is present in the crawl space of a restaurant on the Waterlandse Zeedijk in Monnickendam after a leak. Firefighters cordoned off the area and are using ventilators to evacuate the gas from the building.

Employees smelled a gas smell around 11 a.m. this morning and evacuated the building themselves. A spokesperson for the Zaanstreek-Waterland Security Region says that it went well and that no one was injured.

“They have a propane tank with gas at a distance from the building,” he explains about the gas leak. “A large amount of propane has ended up in the crawl space of the company.”

Firefighters are working with ventilators to get the gas out of the crawl space. “That will take some time,” says the spokesperson. “So how long that will take is not yet known.” The fire service is receiving help from surrounding fire departments. “There are special ventilators from Amsterdam.”
