About 30 surrounding homes were evacuated on Thursday due to a gas leak in an empty flat in the Venlo district of Genooi. The residents have been taken care of in community center De Witte Kerk.

Things went wrong at Bisschop Hoensbroeckstraat around 8 p.m. A gas leak has occurred in the empty flat. The street and part of Veldenseweg have been closed off.

Explosion hazard
A spokesman for the fire service said it was a major leak. “The gas supply and electricity are cut off. We have been able to tackle the explosion hazard, but it remains dangerous. Therefore, do not come and watch and keep your distance”, the fire service spokesperson warns.

To collaborate
This is a GRIP 1 situation. This means that there is a need for cooperation between the emergency services. That is why the fire brigade, police and ambulance are on site. Firefighters must ventilate the building in a controlled manner. It is not yet clear whether the residents will be able to go home on Thursday evening.

No power
It is not yet known what caused the gas leak. However, there is a power outage. According to grid operator Enexis, this would be a spontaneous failure. About 25 households will be without power until 10:30 p.m. Enexis technicians are working on a solution.
