Work has been going on along the Dolfijnkaai for some time for the further renewal of the Leie banks. A medium pressure gas pipeline was hit during excavation work. Residents spoke of a penetrating gas smell. The fire brigade therefore preventively evacuated nine local residents. Around 8:45 am the pressure could be released from the damaged gas pipeline, meaning that the greatest danger has passed. Afterwards, the pipe will be repaired.
The police closed off the surrounding streets to traffic, causing some traffic disruption in the city center.
