The evacuation of a block of flats in Anderlecht due to a gas leak has caused traffic chaos in Brussels ahead of the Europa League quarter-final second leg between Union Saint-Gilloise and Bayer Leverkusen.
Bayer fan relations called on all fans who had traveled to travel directly to the stadium in order to be there in time for kick-off (9:00 p.m./Live on RTL).
“There is a very big gas leak. The game is not in danger, but there is traffic chaos. The buses from Leverkusen that we know of are being escorted by the police and brought here as soon as possible,” said a police spokesman. A total of 200 people were evacuated, and the fire brigade is looking for further gas leaks.
As in the round of 16 against Union Berlin, Saint-Gilloise’s “home game” will take place in the Lotto Park (capacity: 21,500 spectators) of city rival RSC Anderlecht, because their own stadium does not comply with UEFA regulations and is simply too small.
1,660 Bayer fans can support their team on their way to the first European semi-final since 2002 in the guest block. There was no official fan meeting in downtown Brussels in the afternoon.
