GAS fines for litter doubled during action week compared to last year | Interior

The number of GAS fines for litter, which were handed out during Enforcement Week, has more than doubled compared to the same action period in 2021. Mooimakers, the Flemish initiative against litter and illegal dumping, reports this.

There has been an increase in the number of verbal reminders: from 2,003 reported cases in 2021 to 2,288 reported cases this year. But especially the number of GAS fines for litter has increased significantly: from 1,015 reported cases in 2021 to 2,095 cases this year.

“We should continue to regard this doubling in the number of cases as an important signal. Too many Flemish people still carelessly deal with their waste outside the home. By increasing the chance of being caught during the Enforcement Week, we want to send a signal that this negligence must be over. Waste belongs in the rubbish bin and anyone who sins against this should have known it,” says Jan Verheyen, spokesperson for Mooimakers.

Enforcement Week took place from 3 to 9 October. 180 Flemish cities and municipalities, accounting for 1,513 participants, took part. With the annual initiative, Mooimakers asks for more attention to be paid to enforcement of litter and illegal dumping.
