Garment worker killed during protest in Bangladesh

A woman has died from her injuries following a protest by garment workers in Bangladesh.

Several other demonstrators were injured during Wednesday’s protest near the capital Dhaka, a police spokesman said. Hundreds of demonstrators clashed with the police, who used tear gas. The demonstrators demanded higher salaries. Bangladesh is the second largest clothing producer in the world after China.

Only on Tuesday, Labor Minister Monnujan Sufian announced that textile workers should receive at least 12,500 taka (106 euros) per month from December instead of the previous 8,000 taka (68 euros). The government set the new minimum salary in consultation with representatives of trade unions and factory owners. Even during the talks there were sometimes violent protests by thousands of textile workers who, among other things, demanded pay that was almost twice as high as the current amount due to the significantly increased cost of living.
