The 33-year-old garage mechanic from Lokeren who cut off a man’s hand last weekend is now filing a complaint himself for attempted manslaughter. “My client just defended his property,” says his attorney Sven Mary. “Suddenly 20 men with a pistol were standing at his garage to take a repaired van without paying. My client only hit that iron because they tried to pry his gate open. That is lawful defence.”

Yesterday, the council chamber in Dendermonde extended the arrest of two suspects by one month. Two others have been released on bail – among them the man who lost his hand last weekend. The investigating judge released him to have his sewn hand followed up medically. The garage mechanic who cut off his hand and his brother – co-manager in the garage – were allowed to return home last weekend after their interrogation. They were not brought before the investigating judge and therefore not charged.
