Gang by Mina Kroes brings the medieval chariot game back to life

The Gang of Mina Kroes brings these bygone times back to life with a traditional chariot game, to be seen eleven times this weekend and next weekend in the southwest corner of Drenthe. The performances were initially not in the agenda, but due to the corona time, the idea bubbled up to come to the people. The large theaters were closed, but audiences could admire the play outside at an appropriate distance from each other in small clubs.

Veenstra: “It turned out to be such a success that we said to each other: we will continue with this.” Because the cast almost matches the earlier outdoor production Mina Kroesthe current company was renamed The Gang of Mina Koes, element of Theater barn Linde.

Bit stupid takes place, as befits the chariot game, in the Middle Ages (year 1268). In the village of Wolde it is a party because of the 25th anniversary. Until a representative of the bishop of Utrecht comes to visit. “He has decided to build a Dom Tower, which requires money,” says Veenstra. “At that time it was customary to collect money from the believing people, by declaring them sinful and having their sins paid off. Cathedrals and churches were built with the proceeds of the indulgence trade.”

Those who can’t wait to experience such an ancient spectacle up close can find a free spot around one of the chariot games. But, Veenstra adds in a witty way. “A small contribution to go home with a clear conscience is always welcome.”
