Subscribers receive free titles every month as part of Xbox’s Games with Gold program. Microsoft is again offering free games for August.
Games with Gold is part of Xbox Live Gold and Xbox Game Pass Ultimate. In addition to various other services, users also get a few selected games to download free of charge for a certain period of time every month. Now Microsoft has announced the free games for the month of September. TECHBOOK rates the titles.
September’s free Xbox games
Four video games are coming to Xbox in September as part of Games with Gold. As usual, there are also two titles for the Xbox 360. This month is a real all-time highlight!

Thrillville (Series X/S, One, 360)
Availability: September 1-15, 2022
“Thrilleville” is about building the most spectacular amusement park possible. The name says it all: the guests should experience a lot of thrills. The demands of the visitors increase from time to time. However, the title is not new. The game was released for Xbox in 2006.
The game normally costs 9.99 euros in the Xbox store; in September users get it free for a certain period of time. The reviews are limited. While “Thrilleville” still has a metascore of 71 and thus performs very well for a game of its class, the Xbox version fails in the player ratings. Many criticize the now outdated design and the small size. However, some also praise the entertaining nature of the mini-games.
Double Kick Heroes (Series X/S, One)

In this zombie shoot ’em up, battle sequences are accompanied by heavy metal rhythms. To the beat of the music, you then have to fight your way through zombie hordes and pass various levels. The goal is to bring the bravely playing band back to the surface safely.
Overall, the game received very balanced to good reviews. Players and critics praise the high entertainment value and the soundtrack. It has a meta score of 72 and a user rating of 7.3. Apart from the action in September, the game costs 21.99 euros for the Xbox.
Portal 2 (Series X/S, One, 360)

It’s “portal” time! Perhaps one of the greatest games of all time is coming to Xbox for free in September. The principle itself is simple, but the implementation is sometimes very tricky. The player has to move through a mysterious research facility using various portals. On the one hand, it is important to get the timing right. On the other hand, you have to understand how the portals are arranged.
With a Metascore of 95, this title from 2011 is a small bet. Whether you’ve played the Portal series or not, be sure to take advantage of September’s Xbox sale now. Among other things, critics and players praised the sophisticated level design. And although the plot is only a minor matter, the funny dialogues are not to be scoffed at either. The game costs EUR 19.99 without the “Games with Gold” campaign.
Gods Will Fall (Series X/S, One)

With “Gods Will Fall” is also a fairly new title part of the September offer. For thousands of years, the gods have demanded unconditional and sometimes cruel obedience from humans. Set in a Celtic setting, the player rebels against domination in this indie roguelike. Eight warriors, the last survivors of their tribe, fight their way individually across the island of the gods and face their trials. The players have to use the abilities of the characters perfectly.
The meta score for “God Will Fall” is currently 70; the Uder rating at 6.3. Above all, the optics, the storytelling and the gameplay are praised. The degree of difficulty is partly arbitrary, depending on the order of the gods to be fought. You should generally have a certain tolerance for frustration. By the way, the title actually costs 14.99 euros for the Xbox.
How to redeem the free Xbox games
If you want to download directly from the console, you will see a corresponding tile for Xbox Live Gold or Xbox Game Pass Ultimate on the Xbox home page. The games are then available for download in the corresponding period in the menu behind them.
Otherwise, the “Games with Gold” titles are also available online. The free Xbox games are then stored in the menu item of the same name. If you redeem them there using the button, you can download them directly when you log in with your Xbox. However, with both variants it is necessary to enter the credit card details, as with paid games. However, Microsoft will not issue an invoice for the game during the corresponding period.
