As the guitarist of Dr. Feelgood Wilko Johnson provided the unmistakable sound of the English band in the seventies and played guitar in a punk style before punk even existed. The musician, who died on Monday, is best known to fantasy fans for his appearance in “Game of Thrones”. Accordingly, many are saddened by the loss.

“A great musician and a terrific Ilyn Payne,” wrote Linda Antonsson and Elio Garcia, the operators of the Westeros fan site, on Twitter. “But by all accounts, he was a much nicer person than the character he played on ‘Game of Thrones.'” “Dr. feel good Ser Ilyn Payne. RIP Wilko Johnson. A true original,” wrote another fan.

Fans also reacted to the news on the Reddit platform. “Oh, that’s so sad. I remember reading that he’s ill and that’s why we couldn’t see him in the later seasons. No more pain for him may he rest in peace,” wrote one user. “This is a great loss. He was an incredibly influential and unique guitarist. When ‘GoT’ first aired, I almost fell off my chair when it came up on screen. ‘Holy shit – is that Wilko Johnsos?!?’” recalled another.

Johnson appeared on the show for a total of four episodes in the first two seasons before exiting after being diagnosed with cancer. He played the executioner Ilyn Payne, who, according to his profession, plays a decisive role in the story in the truest sense of the word. Though the character is mute, Johnson made an impact with his wacky facial expressions.
