Six months before the Olympic Games, shot putter Sara Gambetta (30) surprisingly ended her career.
“It’s about time and it’s the right time,” said the runner-up at the 2023 European Indoor Championships: “I quickly realized that the tank for 2024 was empty.” Gambetta made it to the final at the 2023 World Cup in Budapest, she came eighth at the 2021 Olympics and fifth at the 2022 home European Championships in Munich.
Now Gambetta lacked the “fire and fighting spirit” to really torture himself again for the Olympics in Paris: “I kept asking myself whether I was ready to take on the immense training effort and hardships as a competitive athlete again. And I was able to answer that with ‘no’ at some point.”
Instead, she wants to finish her studies and become a teacher.
