Gakpo 20m more expensive thanks to World Cup goals – Man Utd back on track after Ronaldo exit

PSV professional is Europe’s top scorer

Cody Gakpo is one of the stars of the World Cup in Qatar with his three goals and even before that things were going well for the PSV Eindhoven striker with 30 goals in 23 games – according to the “Times“ strong influence on the price tag of the Dutchman. Accordingly, Manchester United is again interested in signing the 23-year-old offensive all-rounder. In the summer, the deal could have gone through for 30 million euros.

Now PSV is said to be demanding a transfer fee of more than 50 million euros for Europe’s top scorer, who extended until 2026 in January. “I was about to leave the club. At that time, the transfer to England fell through because the “Red Devils” agreed with Ajax Amsterdam on the EUR 95 million move from Antony (22). Since then there has been a break between England’s record champions and Cristiano Ronaldo (37) – United therefore have some catching up to do in the center of the attack.

Gakpo, who is listed as a left winger on Transfermarkt and is used there by PSV coach Ruud van Nistelrooy, also shone as a center forward at the World Cup. In the last market value update of the Eredivisie, the Eindhoven-born player increased by €10m and is now the most valuable footballer in the league at €45m. He would be United’s fifth signing from the Netherlands this season, after manager ten Hag, centre-back Lisandro Martínez (24) and Antony, all from Ajax, and Tyrell Malacia (23). In the summer, the “Red Devils” already transferred around 169 million euros, including the 2 million euros for ten Hag.

If Gakpo is also added for the rumored 50 million euros, United Stand would now be responsible for more than half of the transfer income of the entire Eredivisie in 2022/23. PSV, level on points with champions Ajax and three points behind Feyenoord in third place after 14 games, will soon be chatting with their best player about his future – Gakpo gave the roadmap to The Athletic: “After the World Cup. I don’t think about that now. I’m very focused on the tournament, trying to keep performing well and helping the team. And hopefully when we become world champions I can think about it.”

After Ronaldo’s departure, Manchester United only has one trained center forward in Anthony Martial (27) – Gakpo would be the seventh player whose main position is on the wings. However, that shouldn’t stop the fifth-placed Premier League team from making a second attempt in January with the most accurate Dutchman in the World Cup.
