Gabby Petito’s Family Claims $50 Million Compensation: “Agents Failed to Protect Her” | Abroad

The family of murdered Gabby Petito, 22, announced Monday that it is filing a lawsuit against the Moab Police Department and local authorities in the US state of Utah. According to the relatives, officers could have prevented the girl’s death by acting more decisively in an earlier intervention. The family is demanding $50 million in damages.

Almost a year after the drama, the Gabby Petito case continues to stir people’s minds. Petito’s parents are now filing a lawsuit against the police and local government agencies for negligence. They announced this in front of their lawyers during an online press conference.

Gabby Petito and her fiancé Brian Laundrie were stopped by police on August 12 last year during their road trip after a call about an argument between the couple. According to a witness, Laundrie had punched his girlfriend. In a conversation with the officers, however, Petito took the blame for the scuffle. The officers then released the couple.

Petito was reported missing on September 11, 2021, and her disappearance left the United States under spell. Her body was found on Sept. 19 in a Wyoming national park, nearly four weeks after her family last heard from her. The coroner ruled that Petito died of strangulation.

Her fiancé Brian Laundrie admitted to killing her in a notebook found with his body in a Florida wildlife sanctuary. An autopsy showed that Laundrie took his own life.

After the release of the bodycam images of the intervention that had taken place on August 12, the police’s actions were criticized. The question was raised whether a more decisive action by the officers could have prevented Petito’s death. And that’s what the girl’s parents seem to think now, too.

“While full evidence has not yet been made public, when released, it will clearly demonstrate that if the officers were properly trained and followed the law, Gabby would still be alive today,” attorney James McConkie said. He claimed that the police had been poorly trained for years and that, partly because of this, they continuously failed to protect people against domestic violence.
