G7 summit kicks off in Germany, leaders talk about war in Ukraine | NOW

The G7 will meet in the coming days to discuss, among other things, the consequences of the war in Ukraine. The leaders of Canada, Germany, France, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, the United States and the European Union are meeting at a summit in Elmau, Germany, near Munich. Several other leaders have also been invited. For example, Ukrainian President Volodomyr Zelensky gives a digital speech.

The agenda of the summit includes new sanctions against Russia. Earlier this week, it was announced that the United States is in talks with allies about setting a maximum price for Russian oil. In this way, Russia can earn less money from the sale of oil.

Food prices will also be discussed. As a result of the war in Ukraine, prices for grains, cooking oil, fuel and fertilizers have soared. Nearly a third of the world’s wheat supplies come from Russia and Ukraine.

There will also be talks about climate change during the summit, but experts are not counting on a breakthrough.

Protest groups have announced that they want to demonstrate against the economic summit. Police fear actions by far-left groups and possible protests related to the cost of living, the corona measures and the war in Ukraine.
