The European team G2 Esports is in the semi-finals of the League of Legends tournament Mid-Season Invitational. After five defeats in a row, however, it became close at the end.
“I’m glad we can end the Rumble Stage with a win,” said Germany’s Sergen “Broken Blade” Çelik of G2 Esports in an interview after the Evil Geniuses game.
“Now that we’ve lost the previous games, we can learn from the losses. I think that makes us better.”
G2 after defeat only just in the next round
For G2, the Rumble Stage was much tighter than initially thought. After a strong start, the LEC champions’ winning streak against PSG Talon from Hong Kong broke on the third day of the Rumble Stage. After that, G2 didn’t succeed anymore: With four defeats in a row, the team went into the last matchday with a difficult starting situation.
Against outsider Saigon Buffalo from Vietnam, the next defeat followed for G2 and thus intensified the race for progress. Both RNG from China and the Korean champions T1 and Evil Geniuses from North America were already in the semi-finals at this point.
But G2 breathed a sigh of relief as the European champions eventually qualified for the knockout stages thanks to a win by RNG over PSG. Against EG, G2 then recovered and ended their own losing streak at the end of the Rumble Stage.

In the semifinals on Saturday, the European representative meets T1 again. “Right now I’m very happy. We’re confident going into the next round,” said Broken Blade, looking ahead to the knockout stages.
