The favorite defends its title: G2 Esports clearly prevailed 3-1 against Fnatic in the season finale of the League of Legends LEC. In the duel between the traditional teams, the team from the Berlin e-sports organization hardly showed any weaknesses.
After the victory, Frenchman Steven “Hans sama” Liv wrapped the national flag around his shoulders and the audience in the arena in Montpellier couldn’t stop cheering.
Overwhelmed, he spoke up: “I never thought it would be like this again, on a French stage. Last time I lost against G2. But today I’m very happy to win on such a big stage in France.”
LEC: Favorite G2 dominates first games
The two teams’ journeys to the final couldn’t have been more different: G2 already has two titles under their belt this year and came to Montpellier as defending champions. Fnatic, on the other hand, had a difficult start to the year, not even making it past eighth place in the winter and spring seasons. It wasn’t until the summer that the British team’s form picked up speed.
Over 1,000 days have passed since the two teams last met in a final. From the beginning there was an exchange of blows between the opponents, every elimination by Hans sama was accompanied by applause. G2 confidently brought its lead across the finish line. The second game was even more clear: G2 didn’t give Fnatic any room to breathe and played their way to match point.
LEC record champions: G2 Esports now with twelve titles
Fnatic still had the chance to turn the series around. With their backs against the wall, the team showed fighting spirit in the third game and fended off a 3-0 defeat. G2 remained unimpressed: in the next game, the defending champions literally overran Fnatic and were crowned champions of the LEC for the twelfth time to thunderous applause.
“This year was incredible, I won my first titles,” said Hans Sama in an interview after the final. “I’m very happy to be where I am now and really grateful for all my teammates who paved the way for me to success.”
