At the men’s fashion weeks of the FW24 season in the fashion metropolises of Milan and Paris, it wasn’t just designers who impressed with theirs Catwalk presentations. The invited guests also created individual looks in which many contrasts could be observed.
While some visitors went bare skin, others braved the winter temperatures with warm teddy jackets or elaborate layered looks. The pink ‘Barbie’ trend triggered by last year’s movie seemed to have left an unexpectedly lasting mark. In contrast to this were androgynous suit trousers, which were hard to beat in terms of volume.
‘I’m Just Ken’
Although following the ‘Barbie’ trend abrupt end predicted Ken can’t be written off yet. This season, the popular doll’s boyfriend stepped out of the shadows and proved – he is ‘Kenough’ – in delicate pink tones or rich fuchsia.
Male fashion enthusiasts presented complete outfits in Barbie’s favorite color, contrasting with black and white, as an accessory or even as a hair color. Instead of the tanned complexion – like Ken actor Ryan Gosling in the Barbie film – shoes, gloves or ties were a popular choice to add small accents. Pink was also used extensively with coats, jackets and shearling jackets.
Wrapped up
While light scarves adorned necks in summer, long, thickly woven scarves were taken out of the wardrobe in the cold season. Long fringes and a coarse knit pattern characterized this season’s warm companions – less often logos or brand emblems.
In addition to the option of incorporating bright color elements, the large-format scarf also offered space for statements, as with Cognomen, the label by Japanese designer Michael Hitoshi. While it used to just peek out from under the coat, it has now established itself as the main protagonist: worn loosely over an open jacket or wrapped around the head, it enhanced every look.
Comfortably warm
Visitors to the catwalk shows were able to convey a feeling of childlike nostalgia through fur and teddy bear jackets. Of course, contemporary faux variants of non-animal origin were used here. The fluffy-looking pieces ranged from grey-blue and subtle snow white to bright rainbow colors or a shaggy leopard print.
The versatile jacket bridged the gap between elegance with black leather trousers and a beret, but also created a casual look inspired by hip-hop culture with baggy trousers, a cap and sneakers. This season, even men resorted to practical shoulder bags to complete their outfit, such as those from the Italian fashion house Bottega Veneta or the Spanish luxury brand Loewe.
deep insights
Cropped tops, shirts with deep necklines or off-shoulder cardigans revealed many a glimpse of chest or abdominal muscles. While men’s crop tops have their origins in American football and were quickly picked up by sports brands such as Nike and Adidas, this season they are represented in the form of knitted items.
Shirts worn open were held together by buttons or a safety pin, while off-the-shoulder vests were modeled on women’s fashion, as shown by Jacquemus last year. However, the color palette in the masculine version remained reserved, monochrome or in combination with camel or gray tones.
In all situations
A new dimension of ‘layering’ was presented to guests using different lengths, textures and styles. In terms of color, a neutral approach was chosen and similar nuances remained: the ‘latte’ look inspired by the colors of coffee or shades of gray dominated.
Turtleneck sweaters could be found under shirts, capes on top and a shortened, wide jacket with distinctive lapels or duffle vests, with wide trousers, fur shoes or sneakers. Wide scarves and bags made of knit or leather added an additional stylish layer.
Baggy suit trousers
Suits have previously offered the opportunity to be on the safe side when it comes to clothing. In order to get involved in the fashion world despite the classic component, the extremely generously cut jackets first appeared, which were particularly popular in the pop culture of the 80s. Now they made a statement with XXL suit pants.
In Paris and Milan you could see the overly long and wide legwear in typical suit fabrics: On the one hand, wool melange or checked fabrics were combined with a matching gilet or jacket, but often a contrast was also set with black outerwear and a matching bag. Understated, flat shoes give the it-piece room to make an impact.
