Future Russian driver Nikita Mazepin at Haas very uncertain | Motorsport

Haas is originally an American racing stable, but the Russian company Uralkali has been the title sponsor since last year. Haas has been driving around in Russian livery ever since. Dmitry Mazepin, the father of racing driver Nikita, is co-owner of the company. Mazepin senior has close ties to the Kremlin and attended a meeting with President Putin earlier this week.

On Friday, Haas drove around in a completely white car, during the third day of testing in Barcelona. The race stable decided to remove all references to Russia and Uralkali. “This was the right decision to make. We have now made a statement and must look into all legal matters next week,” Steiner said.

Hare not in danger

The team boss says he cannot yet say whether Mazepin can continue as a driver next to Mick Schumacher. “There are no guarantees, we have to see how the situation will develop. We are not the only party, of course. Governments are involved, we have no influence on that. We have to take a good look at everything next week.”

In severing ties with Uralkali, Steiner says Haas’ near future is not in danger. He already had extensive consultations with team owner Gene Haas on Thursday. “Financially, our situation is okay. This will not affect the way we run the team next season.”
