Future at AS Roma: Will Dybala use low release clause at AS Roma?

Mourinho factor in the move

Paulo Dybala seems to feel very comfortable with AS Roma and probably does not want to make use of his exit clause in the contract that is valid until 2025 next summer. The Argentinian, who only wants to think about the present, leaves a back door open. According to the editors of the transfer expert Gianluca Di Marzio the 29-year-old attacker could go for around 20 million euros if an interested club deposits the same amount. The clause – €10m below its current market value – is said to have been insisted on by Dybala’s advisors during negotiations with the Serie A club.

What happens after the season, Dybala could not answer specifically. “That will certainly be discussed later. My future is here to take Roma to the top and I believe we can do that. What will happen in the future… I don’t know because the most important thing right now is the games,” said the offensive man in an interview with the “Marca”. Dybala moved from Juventus to the Romans on a free transfer in 2022 after seven years. Since then, the left foot has scored twelve goals and seven assists in 25 competitive games.

Dybala only found positive words about his new employer. “Maybe people who have never seen a game here don’t appreciate it. I would recommend it. There are few places where you can experience football like this. Certainly a lot in South America, but only in a few places in Europe. It’s a real spectacle, the fans are unique and if they had their way Roma would deserve to be in the top flight. That’s why we have to do things right and bring Roma to the same level as the fans,” explained the newly crowned world champion.

A key factor in his move was coach José Mourinho. “Before I came here, I had already spoken to José on the phone. I liked the way he communicates, who he is and how he handles every training session and every game. This phone call convinced me to come to Roma. I’ve had the opportunity to play with the best in the world and now I have the opportunity to work with one of the best coaches. That appealed to me, he’s a winner,” said Dybala. In the Serie A table, the Giallorossi are fourth after 25 match days – leaders SSC Napoli are already 18 points ahead. In the Europa League round of 16 it is this Thursday against Real Sociedad. AS Roma won the last title last year by winning the newly created Conference League.

Nine months ago, Dybala became Roma’s second most valuable signing after Tammy Abraham (25), who was signed by Chelsea in 2021 for 40 million euros and is therefore also the second most expensive club purchase. Dybala is currently seventh in the Serie A goalscorers list. The 36-time Argentina international is now a long way from the highest market value of his professional career – 110 million euros in the summer of 2018. In 293 games for Juventus, he had 115 goals and 48 assists – tenth among the Bianconeri’s record scorers, tied with Roberto Baggio.
