Xavi Simons gave RB the lead in the 6th minute on Saturday (September 16th, 2023), Lois Openda increased (11th), David Raum made it 3-0 before the break (26th). Thanks to the threesome, RB is in third place with nine points and is within one point of the top duo Bayern Munich and Bayer Leverkusen. FCA is still waiting for its first win of the season.
Leipzig brutally effective
The game had barely started when RB was already ahead. Immediately with the first good attack, Openda found the head of Simons, who was flying far too freely, with his cross from the right – the 1-0. Simons returned the favor five minutes later with an assist: his pass found Openda on the edge of the penalty area, who made it 2-0 with a low shot. When David Raum scored RB’s third goal of the day in the 26th minute after a low cross from Yussuf Poulsen, the game was already over. All three shots at the Augsburg goal were possible.
Things got even more bitter from the Fuggerstadt team’s perspective shortly before half-time when Niklas Dorsch apparently had to be substituted with a thigh injury. It could have even been 4-0 by the break, but Openda was denied by Augsburg goalkeeper Finn Dahmen in the 41st minute.
Leipzig takes two gears out, Augsburg improves
Augsburg’s coach Enrico Maaßen made three changes at halftime – and that had at least some effect. Phillip Tietz forced Leipzig keeper Janis Blaswich to do his first proof of work in the 51st minute – and he showed a great flying performance. It was now a more open game, space was wasted against Dahmen (56th), on the other hand Blaswich was again on the post with a strong save against Demirovic (58th).
Leipzig had long been in administration mode and the FCA showed some resistance after a really weak first half – but at no point was the success of coach Marco Rose’s team in danger. FCA didn’t want to score a goal that day.
Leipzig in Gladbach, Augsburg against Mainz
On the 5th matchday, the Leipzig team will be challenged in Gladbach (Saturday, September 23rd, 2023 at 3:30 p.m.). At the same time, FC Augsburg welcomes the guests from Mainz. However, RB will face the Young Boys in the Champions League on Tuesday.
