FC Bayern Munich gave Mainz 05 a debacle. Coach Thomas Tuchel’s team showed unusual enthusiasm and determination. It was an all-round successful Saturday afternoon (March 9, 2024) for FC Bayern Munich, on which coach Thomas Tuchel’s team seemed to get all the frustrations of this season off their chests.
With a clear 8:1 (3:1) against Mainz 05, the Munich team ended the game against Rheinhessen, who were completely overwhelmed in the end – and they crowned a successful week in which they qualified for the quarter-finals against Lazio Rome Champions League had qualified. For Mainz, who were in the bottom of the table, the game ended up being a debacle.
Bayern’s Kane cannot be stopped
“We were very dangerous in the first half, played our offensive game and were then very effective”said Bayern coach Thomas Tuchel at the Sportschau microphone. The key to the great victory was the good beginning, “that is what we expect and can expect from ourselves“. Now you try to get the maximum out of it, “The season isn’t over yet”.
Above all, attacker Harry Kane with three goals – who now has a total of 30 goals on his personal goal account after 25 match days – stood out from the extremely strong Munich team.
Right from the start it was a fast-paced game as both teams tried their luck on the offensive. To be expected from Bayern, but certainly a (too) courageous approach from Mainz. There were no real chances to score yet, but there was at least some good entertainment value early on.
Musiala in strong form
After seven minutes, the strong Jamal Musiala had a first opportunity for FCB, but Mainz goalkeeper Robin Zentner was able to clear with a punch. Six minutes later, Munich took the lead.
Musiala served attacker Harry Kane in an exemplary manner, who only had to push it into the empty goal from five meters to make it 1-0 (13th).
Bayern overruns Mainz
Bayern then took full control – and extended the result. Joshua Kimmich took a free kick from the right side of the penalty area too quickly for the surprised Mainz team: Kane first headed it against the post, from where the ball bounced to Leon Goretzka. He, in turn, also headed the ball against the Mainz goal post, from where the ball this time rolled into the goal to make it 2-0 (19th).
As a result, Bayern virtually overran coach Bo Henriksen’s team. The FCB created one chance after the other without Kane and Co. managing to make a preliminary decision very early on. And the Mainz team took advantage of that by scoring the next goal.
Duel between Raphael Guerreiro (FC Bayern Munich) and Brajan Gruda (1. FSV Mainz 05)
Amiri with a remarkable free kick
Nadiem Amiri hammered a free kick from 25 meters into the Munich net to make it 2-1 (31st). Rheinhessen’s first shot on goal was immediately successful. And it continued refreshingly.
The eight minutes of stoppage time were tough: Barjan Gruda initially had an equalizer for Mainz, his shot from eight meters just grazed the Munich goal.
Almost in return, defender Sepp van den Berg neutralized a header from Thomas Müller on the Mainz goal line. And then there was another hit. Kane prevailed after a fine pass from Goretzka in the Mainz penalty area and made it 3-1 (45th +8) from the turn.
Goal straight after the break
As soon as the game started again, Bayern scored their next goal. Musiala prepared for Thomas Müller, who only had to hold out his foot from five meters to increase the score to 4:1 (47th).
But even after that, the Mainz team didn’t give up and continued to try to increase their goal tally. But Bayern exploited this offensive urge mercilessly.
Gnabry also scores for Munich
Musiala made it 5-1 (61st) after a counterattack and an assist from Kane. The 6-1 followed shortly afterwards when Goretzka crossed to Serge Gnabry, who had just been substituted, who, standing with his back to the goal, scored with a backheel (66th).
And the shooting festival continued happily. Once again it was Harry Kane who was in the right place and converted the ball from two meters after Eric Dier’s header to make it 7-1 (70th). Goretzka scored with a header to make it 8-1 (90+3).
This marked the end and the people of Munich celebrated this liberation after the dark previous weeks.
