On Friday, youth channel FunX pays extensive attention to Keti Koti, the commemoration of the abolition of slavery. The channel will have conversations about freedom all day long and about the meaning of freedom for the listeners.
Also, listeners can request songs that they associate with freedom. That’s what channel coordinator Eva Hol told on Thursday evening in the radio program With a view to tomorrow. “Keti Koti is about a part of our history that we’ve talked too little about for far too long,” said Hol.
FunX wants to emphasize that Keti Koti is an important day for all Dutch people. “It’s part of our history,” said Hol. “It is a subject that concerns all Dutch people.” The station also advocates making it a national holiday. This appeal was also made by the National Coordinator for Racism earlier this week.
Earlier this month, the FunX Foundation launched a campaign to call on people to ask their employers for a day off on 1 July. Listeners can support the action by taking a day off and posting a photo on social media using the “I’m taking time off” filter. FunX reports on this action and talks with listeners about the importance of a national commemoration and holiday.
