Jamie Bynoe-Gittens made BVB hearts beat faster in the Champions League on Tuesday evening. With great individual actions, the young Englishman became the match winner in Borussia Dortmund’s 3-1 win against AC Milan. There was also praise afterwards from teammate Niclas Füllkrug, who also highlighted where the 18-year-old still needs to improve.
Jamie Bynoe-Gittens was involved in almost all of the dangerous offensive actions in BVB’s premier class success until he was substituted in the 66th minute. He took the penalty converted by Marco Reus (10th) in a one-on-one duel with Milan captain Davide Calabria, and after the break he scored himself with a perfectly placed shot to give the team a 2-1 lead (59th).
“It’s a special story, he’s an explosive player,” praised BVB head coach Edin Terzic after the game on “Prime Video” and at the same time explained the early substitution: “Recently he kept having cramps and was very sick the day after the game exhausted. Now he has developed a basis, even if it was a bit tight at the end today.”
Füllkrug benefits “little” from Bynoe-Gittens
Center forward Niclas Füllkrug was also full of praise in the mixed zone: “It’s always extremely dangerous to have a player on the pitch who can tie opponents one-on-one, who can survive in very small spaces.”
At the same time, the German international also emphasized: “I think I benefit very little from that, right? It’s not like he’s already presented me with two or three things. The team benefits.”
Bynoe-Gittens now has to manage to “pull his head up even more” in order to be able to better decide between finishing and passing. “I think he can get a little better there. Then his scorers will go through the roof.”
Füllkrug hopes that BVB can “develop the young winger a little further” because he needs to play “even more consistently over 90 minutes”. Bynoe-Gittens is already a “very reliable player” who deserves to get more playing time.
And Jamie Bynoe-Gittens himself? He was happy about “the perfect game” in Milan. “I tried to take the shot early, the celebration was great,” he said about his goal: “I think we can go far.”
