Fucking Åmål shuddered at the love between the two girls

The youth film Fucking Åmål, released in 1998, was the first exposure to the chemistry between the two girls in the film world. Although today such things are not surprising, at one point there was an uproar about the theme of the film.

Supervisor by Lukas Moodysson first feature film Fucking Åmål from 1998 rose to cult status, especially in neighboring Sweden.

The Swedish youth film, which gathered more than two million viewers, thrilled with its daring point of view and the topic of love and chemistry between two young girls.

14-year-old Elin, played by Alexandra Dahlström, is a popular, beautiful young woman who the boys at school dream about. On the other hand, Agnes, played by Rebecka Liljeberg, is quieter and lonely. In the film, the girls who became friends as classmates are searching for their own identity and dreaming of a wilder life.

The chilling part of the movie in the 90s was that the girls fell for each other. The film shows, among other things, a kiss between girls, which was unusual a good twenty years ago.

Soundtrack

In addition to the fact that the film itself is a success for its story, its music also received praise.

Hit songs by Swedish artists such as Broder Daniel and Gyllene Tider were used in the film. One Finnish song was also wanted for the soundtrack: a song by the band Waldo’s People U Drive Me Crazy. Waldo lived Marko Reijonen55, recalls the end of ysäri to Iltalehte.

– I remember that moment very clearly. Our Finnish record company called and asked that they wanted our song for an independent, low-budget film like this. The song had also been released in Sweden and it had started bubbling to the top of the charts, Reijonen recalls.

Reijonen and the rest of the band agreed to the offer and the song made it into the film. Reijonen recalls that the film’s soundtrack was the best seller in Sweden and the excitement surrounding the film was great.

The band’s song in question was a club hit in Sweden at the time. For this reason, it was included in the film for a similar type of scene.

– The song plays in one of the party scenes in the movie, Reijonen states.

The popularity of the film also increased the popularity of the band Waldo’s People. Thanks to the film, the band got big gigs and got to perform at interesting events in Sweden.

– We were at the Swedish McDonald’s staff party, where there were 10,000 mountaineers. They were exactly the target group (of the film), so we went there as the main performers. It (the film) caused a lot of big issues, Reijonen reveals.
