“Fuck Supreme Court” chorus in Glastonbury

The news that the US Supreme Court yesterday overturned the landmark 1973 Roe vs Wade case also spread like wildfire in the music scene.

Phoebe Bridgers was one of the first to criticize the US Supreme Court’s decision during her performance at the Glastonbury Festival in England yesterday (June 24). “All these irrelevant old motherfuckers trying to dictate what we can do with our bodies,” Bridgers said, clearly touched, in a stage announcement.

“Now honestly: It may sound super surreal and funny. But I’m having a terrible day!” Ready to engage with fans, she asked, “Are there any Americans among us? Then it just pops out: ‘Fuck The Supreme Court!?’

The crowd in front of her stage belted out a “Fuck the Supreme Court” chant, which was intensified by the 27-year-old from Los Angeles: “Fuck that suck. Fuck America. Fuck you!” The accusation against the “old motherfuckers” followed.

The day before, Bridgers had announced in a long interview story with the “Guardian” that he would push an initiative in which US artists would share their own personal experiences with abortions. She herself added via Twitter that she had decided to have an abortion in October 2021. “I went to Planned Parenthood, where they put me on the abortion pill. It was easy. Everyone deserves that kind of access,” she told Guardian reporter Laura Snapes.

Bridgers linked their post to appropriate charity funds where you can donate to the campaign. Her post has been retweeted 50,000 times so far. There was media coverage from the UK tabloid Daily Mail to Guitar Magazine.

Her US colleague Taylor Swift also used her appearance on the “Pyramid Stage” in Glastonbury to make a clear announcement. Ahead of her song “Your Power,” her message to festival-goers was, “Today is a terrible day for all women in America. I’ll say this for a moment because I can’t bear to think about it any longer right now. The song that’s coming is dedicated to all of that!”

Swift threw up the debate with a scathing tweet: “I’m absolutely appalled that we’ve gotten to this point. That after so many decades of people fighting for women’s rights to their own bodies, today’s decision has taken those rights away from us!”
