Centner currently injured
Goalkeeper Robin Zentner (28) from 1. FSV Mainz 05 has missed the last five competitive games due to back problems. Since then, homegrown Finn Dahmen has guarded the goal for coach Bo Svensson’s team – finally the long-awaited season for the 24-year-old. However, Dahmen apparently does not want to extend his expiring contract, but wants to leave FSV free of charge in the summer, as he told the “Picture” affirmed.
“Mainz has opted for Robin several times in recent years. That’s why I’m assuming that my time in Mainz will end in the summer,” Dahmen told the newspaper. He wants to play as number one at a club in the future. The Wiesbaden-born had already underlined that in the Transfermarkt interview a year ago, but then stayed because the Bundesliga club, according to their own statement, “wouldn’t have received a replacement” in August. At that time, FC Augsburg advertised, and Schalke 04 was also said to be interested.
“It’s going to be a big step, after all I’ve been in Mainz since E-Jugend. But I’m also looking forward to it and I feel ready,” Dahmen continued. He had “sat on the bench long enough.” Where he is drawn to is still open, the level of the league plays a minor role in his decision, said the U21 European champion. “Of course you want the Bundesliga. But I can also imagine moving to the second division and going abroad is also an option. Factors such as the goalkeeper coach, style of play and, of course, chances are decisive.”
He has now shown in the past few weeks that he is able to keep up in the Bundesliga: “Even if I don’t have to prove anything to the club or myself, it’s good to be able to show the others outside that I’m in important Playing and being able to perform under pressure.” Having to go back to the bench in the near future is a “frustrating situation”, even if Dahmen can understand why Svensson relies on Zentner: “Robin has played well in recent years, there are then few arguments for the coach to change the goalkeeper.“
