After the cup collapse at St. Pauli
Defending champion Borussia Dortmund sensationally eliminated in the DFB Cup. After the round of 16 defeat at FC St. Pauli, BVB coach Marco Rose answered the questions and launched an all-out attack – against his own team.
What an evening in the DFB Cup. On the one hand: second division club FC St. Pauli – the Hamburg team celebrated the sensational 2-1 win against defending champions Borussia Dortmund in the round of 16. On the other side: BVB. The top favorite after FC Bayern lost in the second round is now out as well. The big surprise.
And: A real evening to forget for BVB – especially for coach Marco Rose. And after the bankruptcy, he first made a frustration speech – on live TV! The 45-year-old didn’t leave a good hair on his own team. “The chance of a title is gone,” said a visibly disappointed Rose on “Sky”. And then it really started: “The way we accepted the game for the first five to ten minutes, it wasn’t a cup game for us. The fact that you were here under the conditions, with the ground, with the strong opponents, you were so in causing problems is inexplicable and inexcusable.”
“A few things confirmed again”
That fits. Rose really got his anger off his chest – he seemed stunned by his own team’s performance: “St. Pauli scored the goal with the first attack, and then it’s just about things that we discussed before: What is St . Pauli out?” Then the coach explained: “They play diamonds, have a relatively tight triangle up front, they keep coming up in combinations in front of the goal, have good depth – we have to take that up and defend it. We didn’t do it, we’re 1-0 up back, run after them, score another own goal, then come back, have chances to score, don’t make them and are out in the end.”
However, this is not a new phenomenon at BVB, but confirms “again a few things that have been held up to us again and again in recent weeks and months, maybe even years.” Then Rose took a deep breath and preached like a prayer wheel: “We just have to take the next step as a team. We have to put energy into this game from the start because it’s about the title. It’s stupid that we can’t do it.”
Even more: “I’m just angry. Because it was a cup round of 16, the chance for a title, we’re basically in good shape and we’re just giving the game away.” Rose repeated: “We just give it away in the first ten minutes, don’t make a cup game out of it, we then have to chase after an opponent where we knew what to expect.”
There will still be a lot of work to do at Borussia Dortmund in the coming days and weeks.
