Frustrated Reus from bench press to match winner

Match winner Marco Reus didn’t even try to hide his feelings after complicated days. “We don’t need to talk about the fact that of course I wasn’t happy that I didn’t play on Wednesday. That’s quite normal, I think, otherwise you chose the wrong job,” said the BVB captain after the 4-1 win against Hertha BSC.

Four days earlier he had to watch 90 minutes in the 1-0 win against Chelsea in the Champions League. On Sunday he played from the start and shone with a dream goal from a free kick and an assist.

Reus played a key role in BVB drawing level with leaders FC Bayern Munich and Union Berlin on points. The title race in the Bundesliga is more exciting than it has been for ages.

“I think before the winter break nobody expected it to be so tight up front,” said Reus. Dortmund started 2023 in sixth place, nine points behind Bayern. BVB has now won eight competitive games in a row. However, Reus did not allow himself to be carried away by a declaration of war.

“We’re all keen on winning titles and that’s why we play football. Of course, our goal is to continue being successful,” he said. “We’re just trying to keep dancing on this wave and then you’ll see what comes out of it in the end.”

BVB is now also mastering more difficult phases and games. The question of mentality, which was often asked in the past, is no longer being asked. “We don’t play the stars from the sky. We’re just effective, that’s what sets us apart at the moment,” said Reus.

Reus chants on the south stand

The 33-year-old, who is repeatedly plagued by injuries, has not been an undisputed regular player at the Revierclub for a long time. But he still enjoys a high standing in the team.

“I’m most happy for Marco Reus today that he scored a very nice goal,” said Julian Brandt, who has been in top form himself for weeks, on behalf of his teammates. Reus also enjoys high recognition in the stands. The fans in the south stand celebrated him with loud chants after the final whistle.

Of course, coach Edin Terzic was also very satisfied with his team and the result. But he didn’t want to look towards Munich or Köpenick to 1. FC Union Berlin either. “We’re not known for being arrogant or demanding. We remain humble,” said the 40-year-old. “We managed to put ourselves in a very good position. However, we still have a long way to go to achieve our goals. 43 points won’t be enough to achieve our goals.”
