The Red Hot Chili Peppers’ album “Unlimited Love”, which will be released in April, was created with the collaboration of guitarist John Frusciante, who left the band for the second time in 2009. Now he explains why he fled and admits that he drifted “deep into the occult” at the time.

Frusciante: “Mentally unbalanced”

“I’ve been pretty mentally unbalanced over the past few years that we’ve been touring,” he says. “All the while I was getting deeper and deeper into the occult, which was my way of escaping the touring mindset.” He also admits his condition: “I was an unbalanced mess”.

Despite his departure, bassist Flea and vocalist Anthony Kiedis had Frusciante in mind when writing the new album. Kiedis recalls that he wrote Unlimited Love without any specific motivation and rather “indirectly” and had the idea: “It would be nice to have John involved in this process”. Although it was a long time ago, according to Kiedis, the guitarist was just about to move back into the old circles after having been in other circles for a long time.

Frusciante’s first thought about reuniting the band was, “I hadn’t written any rock music for so long. Could I still do that at all?” Kiedis reports that he can – and also says at “NME” from the exchange of the previous guitarist Klinghoffer back to Frusciante: Klinghoffer “was not only a great musician, he was also a considered and supportive team player”, but “artistically” it was easier to work with Frusciante because they “musically the speak the same language”.

The current single “Poster Child” shows the harmonious cooperation of the reunited band. In the summer the musicians come to Germany for two concerts.
