Frosinone, Di Francesco’s goal to stay in Serie A

After the disappointments of Sampdoria, Cagliari and Verona, the coach who made Sassuolo great has a new opportunity

Let’s start again. That’s right. Eusebio Di Francesco is ready to restart. And he can’t miss the great opportunity: to return to Serie A. Guido Angelozzi, head of the technical area and the transfer market of Frosinone who amazed everyone with an extraordinary ride that led him to win the Serie B championship, has chosen the coach from Abruzzo to replace Fabio Grosso, betrothed to Sampdoria and no longer in line with Maurizio Stirpe’s club.

Continuity

Angelozzi, a profound connoisseur of the football system, first of all thought of giving continuity to the technical project. Grosso has almost always played with the 4-3-3 (except at the beginning when he also showed a 4-2-3-1), a system that Difra has embraced since he decided to pursue a coaching career . A Zemanian-style module. Which he will carry on, with a team almost completely to redo (he has lost many loans, a total of already about ten players) also in his new adventure in Ciociaria where he should be made official from 1 July because he is still under contract with Verona, his last bench experience.

Revenge

If Frosinone will try to capitalize on their last experience that went badly, relying on quality loans that have already made Serie A, Eusebio Di Francesco will do everything to get a good revenge. He needs it. He has suffered a lot, too much, being out in these two years (“In the last three years I’ve only coached 30 games”, he said recently). But his last few seasons have been very troubled, unlike what happened at the helm of Sassuolo, his masterpiece, and of Rome where in 2018 he reached the historic Champions League semi-final against Liverpool, eliminating Barça. From there begins a descending parable that leads him to his exemption in the capital (March 2019), where he was also a great player, and to a series of slips. The first in Genoa at Sampdoria where he terminated the contract in early October 2019 after just seven games and with the bottom team. Difra starts again in the summer of 2020 from Cagliari, welcomed with all honours. Certain moves (among them the setting aside of the striker Pavoletti) are not convincing and in February the president Tommaso Giulini takes the painful decision by calling Leonardo Semplici to miraculously save the rossoblùs. Eusebio is wounded, but gets up. And in the summer he calls it Verona. But in the city of love the feeling doesn’t click and after three days and as many defeats the adventure ends. In mid-September, Di Francesco was already in his attached hotel in Pescara. “I learned from my mistakes”, he admits in the interviews he gave in a long period in which he too went to update himself from Luciano Spalletti who dominated with Napoli. He was thinking of an experience abroad that he would like to have. Instead he leaves from Italy, from Frosinone, a few kilometers from Rome where he lived moments of glory. But then something broke. Now Eusebio promises a new version. Stirpe and Angelozzi ask him for the salvation mission. Not simple, but certainly fascinating.
