Opel has officially announced that its range of electric models currently made up of Rocks, Corsa, Mokka, Astra, Astra Sports Tourer, Combo and Zafira, as well as the commercial Combo Cargo, Vivaro and Movano will be expanded by two new SUVs, the Frontera and the New generation Grandland which will offer both thermal and electric options.

IT STARTS FROM THE FRONT

Starting with the Frontera which has already been presented in a previous teaser as an exciting SUV that will promise great space inside and the versatility that could attract family buyers. The Frontera name was used in the past by Opel for an Isuzu-based offroad on the market from 1991 until 2004.

IT WILL REPLACE THE CROSSLAND

The new Frontera will be very different from the model of the past, given that it will be placed in the high range of the B-SUV sector and will replace the Crossland. The SUV will be closely related to the new generation Citroen C3 Aircross which will also debut in 2024 in a longer version and a three-row, 7-seater layout.

THE PLATFORM IS THE SMART CAR

This means it will use Stellantis’ Smart Car architecture, offering the option between thermal and electric powertrains for the first time. The new Grandland, however, will be built on the Stla Medium platform, the same as the new Peugeot 3008 and the future Citroen C5 Aircross, available in hybrid and electric versions.

A CLASSIC COUPé

Unlike the Peugeot 3008 which is an SUV-coupé, the new Grandland will maintain the appearance of a classic SUV. Not to mention that it will be offered with a different positioning in the Opel range within the Stellantis group to the point that it will have a more accessible price than the Peugeot. Both models will go on sale by 2024.

STOP THERMAL ENGINES IN 2028

Opel did not provide specific dates for the debut of the Frontera and Grandland indicating that they will arrive soon. The German brand of the Stellantis group has committed to switching to electric-only vehicles by 2028, which means that the thermal and mild-hybrid versions of the new SUVs will only be on sale for four years.
