From Union Berlin to VfL Wolfsburg – Max Kruse on money: “Get the best out of it”

New Union contract was never an issue

Even if Max Kruse had stayed at Union Berlin this winter, it would have been over with the “Iron” in six months at the latest. This was explained by the returnee and 5 million euro newcomer to VfL Wolfsburg on the “Twitch” streaming platform. “Everyone actually already knew that I would not sign a new contract in the summer. There are reasons for that, it was independent of the offer from Wolfsburg,” explained the attacker (quoted via “kicker.de”).

In addition, “financial matters” also played a role in his departure – just like “chapter that I still have open”. Kruse had already played for VfL in the 2015/16 season and contributed nine goals and twelve assists in 43 games. The ex-national player received a contract with the “Wolves” until June 2023.

“I wasn’t having my best time back then, both on and off the pitch. In every club I’ve played for, things have actually been really positive for me,” said Kruse. “It didn’t go well because of a lot of things. Certainly my fault, certainly also the fault of the then commanders in Wolfsburg.” At that time, the 33-year-old was dealing with sports director Klaus Allofs and trainer Dieter Hecking. Everything he started well, “I want to finish well”.

The fact that fans accuse him of having primarily thought about the economic aspect of his transfer does not bother Kruse at all. “I don’t give a damn if I’m called a mercenary or a vulture. Everyone would probably do the same thing,” Reinbeker said, admitting: “Money matters, I’m not 20 anymore. I don’t have that many years anymore. I’ll play football until I’m 35. Normal employees probably work until I’m 65. Of course I can make ends meet, no question about it. But in the end you only have two or three years left. And then you try to get the best out of it.”

Union Berlin got Michel for Kruse – FC Bayern and BVB used to be an issue

Kruse’s transfer from Berlin to Wolfsburg came about at short notice (“I’m sorry too, I can’t change anything”) and surprised those responsible around Union Managing Director Oliver Ruhnert. The Köpenickers then got – on the deadline day – Sven Michel (31) as a replacement from SC Paderborn.

In his professional career, Kruse played for six different clubs in the Bundesliga – he played most games for Werder Bremen (85). FC Bayern used to be an issue, although not specifically. “It wasn’t really an offer, but there was contact,” revealed the left foot. The same apparently applies to Borussia Dortmund, although the exact date remains unknown. “I’ve had conversations there before, but that was a little longer ago.”
