From therapy to international film festival: Mirre to LA

For their project One More Night the residents and supervisors of Zorglandgoed Mirre were given the choice: it must be film in novel or musical form. It is generally known in the film world that the musical genre is difficult. But consultation with the two main characters immediately makes it clear that the Valther film crew is going for it. It’s going to be musical.

It will be a film about a girl who works as a housekeeper for a rich family for little money. In the house she finds two tickets for her idol’s concert. She has no money for herself. This puts her in a dilemma. Does she take the tickets or…

THNV media is an outsider in the film world. While teams participating in 48-hour competitions include semi-professional filmmakers and actors and multimedia students, the team from Valthe consists of teenagers who live on Zorglandgoed Mirre. They are young people with psychological, emotional and psychiatric problems. Young people who have lost (almost) all confidence in themselves, care and others and experience life as hopeless.

At Mirre, young people can play sports and their creativity is stimulated. One of the therapies is making movies. In front of the camera, they learn to show themselves and to express their feelings. It gives young people a lot of self-confidence and improves the image they have of themselves. Moreover, it provides fun in life.

“We currently live on Mirre with thirteen young people,” says Luca, who experienced the film as therapy. “More and more residents started to like this. Some like to act, sing or dance, others are creative with text or sound, for example. Everyone can help. We learn with this, especially during the film competitions, to work together and under pressure to perform. Everyone has a role to play.”
