from the Batmobile to the Ghostbusters Ecto-1

While the world of cinema is holding its breath, in these hours, waiting for the Oscars ceremony, Los Angeles celebrates the seventh art with an extraordinary exhibition at the Petersen Automotive Museum. Hollywood Dream Machines: Vehicles of Science Fiction and Fantasy offers cinephiles, but not limited to, the most spectacular display of cars used by directors on the big screen and in television series that have remained in the memory of entire generations. Forty models became superstars, from DeLorean’s Back to the Futureto the legendary Kitt of Supercarpassing through the Ford Gran Torino of Starsky and Hutch. The Petersen Automotive Museum exhibition tells the story of these cars, how and why they were created, anecdotes and characters who have consecrated them to real motor divas. “Many of these vehicles were props – says Leslie Kendall, curator at the Petersen Automotive Museum – some really existed, others were created ad hoc, after being designed in digital form”. A perfect match between fantasy, design and passion for engines, which becomes a dream set made up of cars, trucks, and spaceships, which have had great success in popular culture in the last thirty years. Here is a selection of what can be seen at Petersen where an exhibition dedicated to 007 James Bond cars is also underway.
