from “Shut up, Karmele” to María José Cantudo’s spit

The gossip press has been orphaned today after the death of one of his parents, Jesús Mariñas. The journalist died this Tuesday, May 10. at 79 years old due to bladder cancer that he suffered from last October 2021. With his departure, Mariñas leaves a great mark in the world of social chronicle, but also in many heart programs in which he became on his own merits in protagonist.

Jesus Marinas was one of the star collaborators of the legendary program ‘Tómbola’ broadcast by the Valencian channel Channel 9 between the end of the 90s and the beginning of the 2000s. Thanks to his sarcasm and mischief with the guests, the journalist gained popularity among the general public, although they were his continuous piques with Karmele Marchante which really catapulted him. Cruz and Raya even imitated their fights, which were more popular with each program.

his mythical phrase “Shut up, Karmele” became an icon of popular culture that still resonates today. As happens in the programs that have drunk from ‘Tómbola’, the confrontation with his partner was used by the program itself to even prepare a fictitious wedding between the two. Remembered is the moment in which Karmele appeared arm in arm with Mariñas dressed as a bride.

During his television interventions, Mariñas was also the meat of controversies and confrontations. One of the most notorious is the one he lived with María José Cantudo on ‘DEC’ (Antena 3). After a tense confrontation, the vedette left the set spitting which Mariñas interpreted as being addressed to him. She returned to the set to explain that she had a piece of hair stuck to her lips because of the gloss.
