From Palermo to Montparnasse: the Argentine cartoonists who succeed in France

“Bande Desinee: Cartoon, from Palermo to Montparnasse in the Collection of the National Library” is the sample of the works of authors, cartoonists and illustrators, who link Argentina and France. The artistic event is part of the celebrations for the ten years of the Center for Argentine Cartoons and Graphic Humor of the Mariano Moreno National Library. At the meeting, the influences, the result of migrations and exiles, that unite the two nations in the emporium of “Band Desinee” (French name of the cartoon or comic).

In recent decades, local cartoonists have begun to seek more propitious air for the development of their expressive and economic potential. The crisis in the Argentine publishing market ended by encouraging the escape of dozens of renowned artists to the French graphic industry, where they are recognized as authors.

On the walls of the Alliance Française, original publications and drawings by Enrique Alcatena, María Alcobre, Juan Bobillo, Carlos Clérice, José Cuneo, Leopoldo Durañona, Dante Ginevra, Gabriel Ippóliti, Pedro Mancini, Domingo Mandrafina, Adolfo Mazzone, Ignacio Minaverry, Guillermo Mordillo, Napo, Natalia Novia, Sole Otero, Eduardo Risso, Carlos Roume, Javier Rovella, Juan Sáenz Valiente, Francisco Solano López, Rubén Sosa, Pablo Tunica and Lucas Varela.

There will also be a tour of different political satire newspapers of the 19th century, where renowned French cartoonists published the first graphic stories in the Río de la Plata region.

The exhibition is curated by Jose Maria Gutierrez Y Lucia Schachter, and can be visited from October 28, 2022 to February 3, 2023. The French Alliance of Buenos Aires It is located at Av. Córdoba 946 and the hours of access to the general public are from Monday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
