From gray and impoverished to green and relaxing: the new Bleekerseiland in Meppel

Initially, a city hotel with at least 54 rooms was considered. That was the lower limit for the entrepreneur. But that requires new construction with three floors. The municipality is not in favor of that. It uses 54 rooms as a limit.

The initiators have come to the conclusion that the total investment in the restoration and renovation of the monumental buildings, together with the new construction, to achieve 54 rooms, is too expensive. That is why they are now aiming for 13 rooms first and the other 41 rooms may be added at a later stage.

When and if that will happen at all is not yet known.

The plan also includes the docking of the pancake ship De Liberté at Bleekerseiland. That boat is now on the other side of the peninsula and should therefore actually turn around.

Only the boat will not actually dock. The ship comes to rest two meters from the shore. That should suggest that the ship is about to depart for another voyage. That fits better with the history of Bleekerseiland. In the past, no boats moored on Bleekerseiland.

That history is given a reference on the site. ‘Large flower boxes’ and a sculpture will be placed on the future lawn, all of which symbolically refer to the flapping sheets. Bleaching of the wax used to be done on site by placing the white wax on a lawn in the sun and sprinkling it with canal water. The flower boxes, benches and play elements must have a ‘wavy appearance’.

The new Bleekerseiland will be accessible via a new bridge to be constructed, where an emergency bridge is now located. The current entrance leads to the hotel.

The city council still has to approve the plans. It is expected that 1.5 million euros will be needed to transform the site from a gray hole into a green oasis. The city council has already made money available for this.
