Block formation in the German EM team: The majority of the players come from VfL Wolfsburg, Bayern Munich and Eintracht Frankfurt. The squad at a glance.
GATE
Merle Frohms (27, VfL Wolfsburg)
Established himself as number one during Almuth Schult’s injury and baby break. With the move from Eintracht Frankfurt back to VfL, he is also following in Schult’s footsteps at the club.
Almuth Schult (31, Angel City FC)
The former regular keeper was out for a long time after an injury and baby break and has to line up as number two behind Frohms. Shined as a TV expert in the first. Powerful and self-confident, wants to make a difference for women’s football with the “Football can do more” initiative.
Ann-Katrin Berger (31, Chelsea)
The former Potsdamer has been living in England for six years. After fighting cancer, he fought his way back up the field.
DEFENSE
Sophia Kleinherne (22, Eintracht Frankfurt)
The defender is a whiz kid. Has played a strong season, should put pressure on the established players as a backup. Was one of the long-running favorites at Eintracht last season without missing a minute of league play.
Kathrin Hendrich (30, VfL Wolfsburg)
The defense specialist from VfL Wolfsburg was last called up in central defense for the national team. Had an outstanding season. Her mother is Belgian, her country of birth is also at the start of the Euro.
Marina Hegering (32, VfL Wolfsburg)
The most experienced in the German squad should hold the defense together. Is up to the task and has outstanding positional play. Due to an injury, she only made five Bundesliga appearances at Bayern Munich last season.
Giulia Gwinn (23, Bayern Munich)
The FC Bayern Munich right-back has fought her way back to the top of the world after tearing her cruciate ligament in 2020. The former super talent has become an experienced force.
Felicitas Rauch (26, VfL Wolfsburg)
Plays in Wolfsburg on the left side of defense with a strong forward drive. That’s exactly what she should show in the national team. The woman from Lower Saxony describes herself as “objective and sober”.
Sara Doorsoun (30, Eintracht Frankfurt)
Father Iranian, mother is from Turkey. She grew up with multiculturalism. Moved from the Wolfsburg substitute bench to Frankfurt in the winter to improve their EM chance – that worked.
MIDFIELD
Lena Lattwein (22, VfL Wolfsburg)
You own the future in Wolfsburg’s defensive midfield. And also in the national team. Strong in tackles and with a good overview, with her 1.76 m also strong in the air.
Lena Oberdorf (20, VfL Wolfsburg)
With overview, technical brilliance and physical strength, she took over the reins at VfL Wolfsburg. Shines especially on the six, but can also help out in central defence. Even as a teenager, “Obi” was considered the greatest German talent, replacing Birgit Prinz in 2019 at the age of 17 as the youngest German World Cup player in history.
Sydney Lohmann (22, Bayern Munich)
After a hip operation, she fought back a regular place at Bayern Munich. She will soon succeed in the national team if she stays healthy.
Svenja Huth (31, VfL Wolfsburg)
At the end of a strong season, Huth became German champion and cup winner and reached the semi-finals of the Champions League with VfL. Together with Alexandra Popp and Sara Däbritz she forms the trio of captains. Strong at dribbling and a good crosser.
Alexandra Popp (31, VfL Wolfsburg)
The 31-year-old is slowly regaining momentum after a long-term injury. Is a “mentality player”, as national coach Voss-Tecklenburg says, and one of the best headers in the world.
Sara Daebritz (27, Olympique Lyon)
Developed into a top player with international experience at Paris St. Germain. Can clear, build and close. Should grow in the young German more into a leadership role. Moves to Champions League winners Olympique Lyon for the new season.
Linda Dallmann (27, Bayern Munich)
Small powerhouse from Bayern Munich. Regularly lifts weights in the gym, prefers to train too much rather than too little. The 1.58 m tall Dallmann is quick as a flash, sure-footed and creative. Will probably provide power as a joker.
Klara Bühl (21, Bayern Munich)
Rising winger from Bayern Munich. Will use the EM to continue learning and to learn a few things from those who have already made it. Can be used as a backup at any time. Put together a three-pack in the test against Switzerland.
Lina Magull (27, Bayern Munich)
Strong in duels, lively, enormously experienced. She is indispensable in midfield – at Bayern Munich as well as in the national team. Free Kick Specialist.
Jule Brand (19, VfL Wolfsburg)
The 19-year-old from TSG 1899 Hoffenheim, who will play for VfL Wolfsburg next season, is the youngest in the German team. Extremely fast, with a lot of train to the goal. Offensively, the coaching team gives her all the freedom.
attack
Lea Schüller (24, Bayern Munich)
With 16 goals for FC Bayern, top scorer in the past Bundesliga season, hits left and right and with his head. Most important striker in the German team.
Laura Freigang (24, Eintracht Frankfurt)
At Eintracht Frankfurt she developed into a team leader, in the national team she will still have to subordinate herself. Tremendous goalie.
Nicole Anyomi (22, Eintracht Frankfurt)
Speed and a lot of assertiveness are her great strengths. Sometimes thinks too much. Her parents are from Ghana and Togo, she uses their platform and campaigns against racism.
Tabea Wassmuth (25, VfL Wolfsburg)
Comes from Hoffenheim, has blossomed into an international top scorer in Wolfsburg. Scored ten times over the course of the Champions League season but had calf problems ahead of the European Championship. Working on her doctoral thesis in the field of neuropsychology.
trainer
Martina Voss-Tecklenburg (54)
Born in Duisburg, she has been the head coach of the German women’s national team since 2018. Led Switzerland to its first World Cup participation in 2015. The former midfielder herself played 125 times for the national team. Was the only mother on the German team during her career. Appreciated for her transparent decisions and approachable nature.
