If you didn’t have spring jitters yet, you will get them when you Van der Bacon Fresh & Garden walks in. At a fifteen minute drive from Zoetermeer you will find everything for your garden or balcony, from bedding plants to garden furniture. And the special thing is: you also immediately grab fresh (regional) products.
The name of this store may sound familiar. That’s not surprising, because the company, based in Zevenhuizen, has been around since 1968. The current owner, Martien van der Spek, has been working there from an early age and took over from his father 25 years ago.
Outing in itself
“We started out as a fresh shop”, says Martien. “We are specialized in vegetables, fruit and cheese. We are strong in seasonal products. Think of strawberries, plums or asparagus. Later, the garden department was added. It started with plants and pots and got bigger and bigger.”

According to him, many visitors experience it as an outing to shop here. “I think that’s because of our extensive range, but also because of our location just outside the city. Although we are located along the highway, you are still away from all the hectic for a while. You see people enjoying themselves.”
Garden furniture
Since 2018, Van der Spek . has been selling garden furniture. The new collection has just arrived. “Our range is extremely wide. We have complete sets for four to eight people, but also, for example, hanging chairs, garden rugs and parasols. We have furniture in different materials, such as wicker, aluminum, rope or wood.
Good stuff for nice prices
The motto of Martien and his colleagues: offering high-quality products for attractive prices. “That applies to everything, but certainly to the furniture. You don’t want to spend money on a nice set, but you don’t want to get bad quality either. It is a shame if you bring something into your home that does not fit well, or that it only lasts one season. That is why we give a two-year warranty on all garden furniture.” Moreover, Van der Spek will deliver your furniture(s) to your home free of charge, even if you order online.

Add olive
Sitting comfortably is one thing, of course you also want to have something to look at. How about an olive tree with the accompanying pot in Mediterranean style, for example? This gives you a holiday atmosphere and some natural shade to your garden or balcony in one fell swoop.
Martien: “I estimate that you will find the largest range of olive trees in the region with us. We import them from Spain, where they have grown in orchards. We have them from 89 euros and for that price you really have a beautiful tree with a sturdy trunk.”
