On a dead-end road in the small village of Westerland, Ingo Halfweeg has been running the Wieringer Frietkraam for a number of years. Cones with homemade robust fries roll over the counter like hot cakes and the croquettes and spring rolls from our own recipe are also a big hit. Yet Ingo puts his successful shop up for sale to embark on a new adventure in Sweden.
Ingo Halfweeg from Westerland has had several jobs in his life. He was a chef at a restaurant, a truck driver and has been delighting Wieringers and tourists with lots of goodies in his Wieringer Frietkraam for about four years now. His homemade fries are especially popular.
The fries are made from potatoes of the Agria variety that grow near his chip shop on the Noorderkerkweg in Westerland. You can call it a real success formula, because many people now know where to find his remote chip shop.
Sweden
Business is going well for Ingo, but he still chooses to put his chip shop up for sale. A long-awaited dream is now becoming reality: he is starting his own bed & breakfast in the Swedish village of Hultsjö, where he has had a holiday home for a number of years.
“It’s nice and quiet there. It’s getting crazier and more hectic here in the Netherlands. For my own health, I think it’s better to leave,” says the chip maker behind his deep fryer.
In Sweden, Ingo hopes to build a less stressful life. “I have been in the catering industry since I was fourteen. The catering industry is a complete madhouse. It is that every day. I wanted to take it easier over the last ten years,” he explains.
Potential buyer
In a year, Halfweeg hopes to be completely over and that is why he has now officially put his chip shop up for sale. “We already have a potential buyer,” he says. Once the tent has been sold, Ingo can definitely move in that direction, but he will have to set up the bed & breakfast largely on his own. His wife will continue to live in the Netherlands for the time being. “She still has her own hairdressing salon,” says Ingo.
Still, that shouldn’t spoil the fun and Ingo is looking forward to his next adventure in Sweden. “Nice and calm.”
