From CES in Las Vegas, smart hi-tech for the home

Qthat of CES extension in Las Vegas has been an important showcase for consumer electronics since 1967. News not only in terms of PCs, peripherals and smartphones, but also in terms of household appliances and hi-tech devices that will soon enter our daily lives.

Hosted by the Consumer Technology Association in the United States of America, after an entirely remote edition in 2021 due to the Covid-19 pandemic, CES returned in 2022 in a hybrid version, with many companies preferring to continue participating virtually at the event, and this year in presence, with about 100,000 participants, including exhibiting companies and visitors.

From the developments in the sector of smart home to new out-of-the-box designs for i electric vehiclesCES 2023, which took place from 5 to 8 January 2023, was an opportunity to see and touch up close the most innovative products destined to be talked about and to enter our homes in the near future.

The future of technology is increasingly green

Sustainability is now an issue on the agenda, in any field, including technology; and it was in fact also a protagonist at the CES in Las Vegas. Whether it is smartphone or PC cases created with recycled materials, such as plastic cans, used bags, etc. or TV remote controls that don’t need batteries. Companies are rethinking their production process day after day meet the growing demand for products that do not harm the environment.

Sustainable food: 10 tips that are also good for the planet

Even within the home the green aspect becomes more and more a must, both for a growing and global attention to the health of the planet, and for a need to save energy and, therefore, cheap. Appliances meant to be programmed and managed remotelyendowed of ECO programs and advanced features they are a reality and manufacturers are increasingly pushing in this direction both for safety devices – surveillance cameras and alarms – and for everyday products such as washing machines, dishwashers and refrigerators.

Hi-tech for the increasingly interoperable and secure smart home

Have you ever thought about the benefits of having every hi-tech product in your smart home work in unison, even when the products have different brands? They would not be few, especially in terms of simplicity and speed of programming and use.

At CES it was presented Matt, a new protocol from the Connectivity Standards Alliancewhich ensures seamless interoperability between smart home devices from Apple, Amazon, Google, Samsung and other manufacturers.

The current fragmentation certainly hinders the functioning of smart homes, especially those who have installed and combined gadgets from different brands.

At the moment over three hundred products already have a Matter certification. Lights, locks and thermostats are some of the currently supported categories, but work is underway to extend compatibility to other smart home devices, such as cameras, appliances and smoke detectors.

All very nice, but in terms of data and credential security? We have all read about the case of intimate photos of a girl ‘stolen’ by the Roomba robot vacuum cleaner and end up on social media…

Matter’s unique approach to smart home security take advantage of blockchain technology to validate and memorize the credentials of hi-tech devices connected to the home network, encrypting messages between devices, allowing the local control (without data traveling across the network to the cloud) and including a path to streamline security updates. Also from this point of view, therefore, we should be able to rest assured.
