From cardinal shrimp to thin-billed curlew: 110 extinct animals commemorated in Grote Kerk

The Grote or Sint Bavokerk in Haarlem was the scene of a special memorial service on Animal Day. A group of fifty interested people reflected on the 110 animal species that have disappeared worldwide since the beginning of this century.

A group of fifty nature lovers spoke about the 110 animals that were still there 23 years ago, but can now only be admired on photo or film. ‘Extinct Animal Day’ was the name that preacher Willemijn van Dijk, initiator, had given the meeting.

Willemijn van Dijk: “It may come across as a very sad way of celebrating Animal Day. But I see it differently. We do it this way to make people aware of the consequences of climate change and to draw attention to the nature that is still there. So I think you can say that it is actually a very hopeful meeting.”
