From Breestraat to race track in Beverwijk: “It’s one big reunion”

The Beverwijkse Breestraat was transformed into a horse race track this morning. That is not a matter of tipping over a bucket of sand. It is a meticulous job that must be done according to strict rules. “It is very precise and otherwise we will not get approval from the union,” says Hans van der Linden, chairman of the Beverwijkse Harddraverijstichting Prins Bernhard.

As usual, Beverwijk is ahead of the race, which will be held for the 99th time this year. “It is a combination of a lot of people and old Beverwijkers,” says a Beverwijk couple who combined the shopping round this morning with a visit to the track under construction. “It’s one big reunion and that’s always a lot of fun.”

One of the contenders for the win is the horse Southwind Raptor of the striking 86-year-old Bert de Boer and pecker Lindsey Pegram. Especially for today the horse got fresh horseshoes.

The race through the street starts at half past three.
