The M90 bear had the radio collar on since the night between 14 and 15 September 2023. As of January 28, 12 approaches had been reported in a residential center or in the immediate vicinity of homes and in 3 other cases the specimen had intentionally followed a couple.
According to the decree that ordered its demolition, “M90 was a dangerous animal, according to the scale of problems reported in the “Interregional action plan for the conservation of the brown bear in the central-eastern Alps (Pacobace), in light of its excessive confidence and frequenting urban and peri-urban areas”.

Carla Rocchi, national president of Enpa, used very harsh words in a statement: «I join in the pain and condolences of all Italians for the execution of M90, an animal that, I remember, never harmed anyone’s hair. The bear was radio-collared, therefore easily identifiable, and was killed a few hours after the death order was given. M90 was executed on the spot, without any possibility of appeal, the one that is generally granted to all convicted criminals. A demonstration of ruthlessness that makes you shudder.”

The Italian Animalists association has instead launched an appeal to the Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and the Minister of the Environment Gilberto Pichetto Fratin, who commented: «Suppression cannot be the only alternative. If what has been implemented to date with the province of Trento has not been sufficient, the commitment – on everyone’s part – must be to multiply efforts to identify every possible solution to guarantee peaceful coexistence in the territories.
