From a 100-year-old suitcase to a Van Gogh scarf

As part of ‘Paris+’, a new fair for contemporary and modern art by Art Basel, Louis Vuitton is exhibiting works by 43 renowned artists.

Louis Vuitton is relying on a group of selected, internationally renowned artists, such as Jeff Koons, Takashi Murakami and Cindy Sherman, with whom the fashion house has previously collaborated, the French fashion house announced on Wednesday. The fashion house is now presenting these joint works, as well as original pieces by the artists, at Paris+. The exhibits include a Van Gogh silk scarf by Koons, a panda sculpture sitting on a Vuitton suitcase by Murakami and a rendition of the Louis Vuitton suitcase by Cindy Sherman.

In addition to the works of the named artists, the exhibition underscores Louis Vuitton’s longstanding connection to the fine arts. Originally it was Gaston-Louis Vuitton, a grandson of the company’s founder, who first collaborated with artists to design perfume bottles and advertising for the fashion house. Since then, Louis Vuitton has worked regularly with artists. The oldest pieces in the exhibition curated by the fashion house are original sketches of two Louis Vuitton suitcases commissioned by Henri Matisse and Francis Picabia in 1909.

Art Basel Paris+ takes place from October 19th to 23rd at the Grand Palais Éphémère in Paris.
