The crisis at Ajax reached a peak (or low point…) last week with the canceled Classic in the Arena, followed by the controversial departure of technical director Sven Mislintat. Sports journalist Frits Barend believes that Ajax director Maurits Hendriks plays a crucial role in the current chaos. “He was very charmed by Mislintat,” says Barend in football talk show De Aftrap.
When asked where the soap opera at Ajax started, Barend remarkably does not choose the forced departure of Marc Overmars because of his transgressive behavior six months earlier. “Maurits Hendriks has done an excellent job at NOC*NSF, but since his appointment on September 19, 2022, things have really gone to a crescendo with Ajax,” Barend said cynically. “And Hendriks is still there.”
According to the former TV presenter, the chaos is mainly the fault of the sporting director and not that of the financial or administrative director. “You can’t say anything went well last year.”
“I would continue to play football in Volendam and not in a stadium outside the village. You must be able to walk to the stadium”
In addition to the crisis at Ajax, the sporting malaise at FC Volendam is also discussed in De Aftrap. “I have a soft spot for Wim Jonk, who stuck his neck out. Together with Jan Smit. I trust him. Only I would continue to play football in Volendam and not in a stadium outside the village. You have to walk to the stadium possible,” says Barend.
The other guest at the table is Erik van den Berg, author of ‘Uit full breast’. This book about more than a century of club songs lhas been available in bookstores since this week. It took Van den Berg ten years to create it. It wasn’t the writing that took the most time, but the research.
“There was still a cassette with the club song at Café De Boer. Original from the Volendammer Opera Choir.”
Van den Berg talks about FC Volendam’s club song: “The first version of the club song was not officially released, but distributed via cassette tapes to a few bars. I knew no one had it anymore and I started calling all the bars. asked if they wanted to look carefully and there was still one at Café De Boer. Original from the Volendammer Opera Choir. I thought it couldn’t be true, could it?”
